Canada Continues to Witness High Number of Job Vacancies

As per the latest Statistics Canada figures, there are 874,700job openings in Canadain 2022. The share of job openings in Canada in November was down 9.3% from October, though it still remained significantly higher than the levels recorded before the pandemic. The country still has almost 874,700 unfilled positions. Despite the decline in the number of job openings over the past two months, the total number of vacant positions remained 78% higher than it was in 2019.

The number of vacant positions in November was 5.1%, which was still higher than the level before the pandemic. In November, the warehouse and transportation sector had a record high of 51,500 job openings. The rate of vacancy in this industry is 6.2%. The warehouse and transportation sector's record-high vacancy rate is the highest recorded since October 2020.

Other economic sectors, such as accommodation and food services, experienced a drop in job openings in November. The number of vacant positions in the vices industry decreased to 130,100 in November. This industry's rate of vacancy remained at 9.9%.

In the healthcare industry, there were almost 11,000 job openings in November, while the vacancy rate is 5.2%. The number of job openings decreased in November in six provinces. Newfoundland and Labrador, for instance, experienced the biggest decline in job openings. In contrast, Manitoba saw a record high of 27,300 job openings in November, which helped boost the province's vacancy rate to 4.5%.

Statistics Canada reported that the number of job openings in November was 37,200, which was up 0.4% from October. The number of job openings in November was mainly concentrated in the service sectors, such as accommodation and food services. According to Statistics Canada, the uptick in employment was largely due to the loosening of capacity constraints and the distancing requirements of businesses.

The construction industry in Canada has been experiencing a recovery, which is in line with the country's overall employment levels. Although the average weekly hours worked by hourly workers and salaried employees remained the same in November, wages were little changed.

Although the effects of the Omicron wave may have yet to be fully explored, November's employment figures indicated that the recovery in Canada's economy is gaining momentum.
