1 Lakh Canadian Visa Delayed: BJP MP Urges Government Action

Over the past few weeks, the time taken for visa processing has increased significantly, leaving many Indians in a lurch. After a two-year hiatus, international travel has finally resumed normalcy, which has led to a number of people lining up for visa applications across different embassies.

Gopal Shetty, a BJP Lok Sabha member, has urged the government to look into the matter of pending visa challenges, particularly for students planning to study abroad.

Shetty highlighted that several students, especially those who returned home during the pandemic and the war, found it difficult to get visas to study abroad. In his statements, Shetty stated that applicants have spent around INR 10-15 lakh in fees and are still finding it difficult to get visas. He highlighted that the embassies being closed was one of the reasons behind it.

Shetty further specifically highlighted Canada as the country with the largest number of visa applications pending, with approximately 1 lakh applications still awaiting a response. He also spoke about cultural troupes from Gujurat facing challenges in receiving their visas for performances in the USA.

Urging the government to tackle the issue by connecting with the countries and requesting clarification to the effect, highlighting that the issue remained with the embassies, rather than the Ministry of External Affairs.

However, the Indian government has been in talks with the US, UK, Canada and other countries on student delays. The government has urged ambassadors and deputy chiefs of missions of eight different countries, i.e. the US, the UK, Canada, and many more, to facilitate quicker visa processing.

Meanwhile, Canada has been infusing money and other resources to clear up student visa backlogs. Canada has been one of the top destinations in the world, both for studies and careers, and the country has been working towards reaching its immigration levels within the coming years.

Nevertheless, there continue to be delays in visa processing, not only in Canada but in almost all top destinations in the world. These delays have resulted in many students missing out on their academics abroad and vacationers being forced to change their destinations.
