Anshika Patel, a girl from Jaunpur, UP, has been accepted at Washington and Lee University in the US for higher studies with a 100% scholarship. She plans to pursue entrepreneurial economics for her further studies in the US.
Patel comes from a rural family of seven in Pakri Godam village of Jaunpur district. Her father owns a small general store in the village while her mother is a tailor.
In spite of coming from an underprivileged background, Anshika dreams of becoming an economist. She is the first in her family to attain education at a renowned international university.

Anshika’s school, VidyaGyan, has played a major role in bringing her closer to her dreams.
VidyaGyan is a Rural leadership Academy in UP. The school provides free world-class and quality education to meritorious and underprivileged students and supports them through guidance and supplies to achieve their goals.
Anshika joined VidyaGyan in 2015. Furthermore, she quoted her mother as her inspiration.
While Anshika’s experience has sensitised her to the economic hardships which are common to families in rural India, it is her mother’s perseverance that has inspired her to see the important role of economics in our day-to-day lives.

Her mother, apart from managing household work and her tailoring shop, also teaches basic sewing skills to other village women. She is also quite opinionated about women’s financial independence. Her mother’s insistence on financial empowerment and entrepreneurship not only elevated their family’s conditions but also induced transformation in society, albeit on a minor level.
Anshika has inference from her mother’s actions that economic concepts like finance and entrepreneurship, coupled with women empowerment can be used to drive positive transformation in society and the country.
As an economist, she wishes to contribute to society by working on existing financial problems.
