US Grants 35,000 H-2B Visas to Employers for Seasonal Guest Workers

The United States has announced the availability of additional 35,000 H-2B temporary nonagricultural worker visas for the second half of the fiscal year 2022.

As per a statement released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Labor (DOL) in the US, the visas would enable US employers looking to hire more employees between April 1 and September 30 2022.

DHS secretary Alejandro N Mayorkas said that these additional H-2B visas would help employers to meet the demand for seasonal employees amidst the labour crisis in the country.

Mayorkas added that the visas are attached with significant worker protections. It will also provide a safe and lawful pathway for those who are planning to come to the US and earn wages in jobs not filled by American workers.

Under the H-2B programme, employers can hire non-citizens on a temporary basis for non-agricultural work services. The job is for a certain period of time such as a one-time event or seasonal. Employers first have to test the US labour market before hiring H2B workers.

Recruiters also should have certification from the Department of Labor stating that there are insufficient US workers who are qualified or available to perform the temporary work. Hence, they are hiring H-2B workers.

Returning non-citizens workers who had received H-2B visas or were given the status in the last years are also eligible for the supplemental H-2B visa allocation.

For the unversed, American companies every year fail to achieve their target to meet their seasonal workforce. The H-2B programme helps recruiters to hire foreign nationals who can stay in the US and work for a certain period of time. However, it should be the non-agricultural sector.

The forms for these visas are usually filled by agents or employers based in the US to rope in a temporary workforce.
