US International Education Strategy: Hyper-Connected World

The United States has unveiled an international education strategy aimed at preparing today's students for a "hyper-connected world." The goal of the plan, according to the US Department of Education, is to address global concerns. It is an upgrade to the previous strategy, which ran from 2012 to 2016.

The strategy, which was released by the US Department of Education under Secretary Miguel Cardona, emphasises the objective of becoming a country where diversity, global problems and opportunities, economic competitiveness, national security, and diplomacy are the reality.

The strategy's architecture, like its antecedent, is built around two goals: enhancing US education and advancing United States international agendas.

To meet these objectives, the US Department of Education says it would improve students' global and cultural competencies while learning from other nations and participating in active education diplomacy.

According to Jill Welch, senior policy adviser at the Presidents' Alliance, it is excellent to see the Department demonstrate how it wants to focus on international education as part of its strategy for enhancing US education and promoting US international interests.

The Department of Education intends to achieve this goal by "engaging bilaterally" with other nations and collaborating with more international organisations - all while exchanging the expertise of their educational systems with one another.

The department's work on academic and professional mobility concerns also aids in the development of ties within the international education community.

The goal of improving US students' global and cultural competency is to produce people who are fluent in at least two languages, aware of cultural differences, and are critical and creative thinkers who can understand different points of view and can operate professionally in cross-cultural situations.

The global competency problem was to be tackled by a "global competency task force" in the 2012 edition, and while it does indicate that foreign languages are a vital tool for making individualsglobal citizens, it is not as prominent in that purpose in this newest iteration.

The third goal, learning with and from other nations to better education in the US, is also something international educators will want to keep a close watch on.

The Department opines that students' performance in the US should be compared to that of students in other nations. The purpose of this study is to determine areas of strength and weakness and then utilise that information to drive learning.

The strategy aims to discover not just how the US compares to other nations, but also what US students know and how they perform, as well as how an individual's talent ties to their work and non-work experiences.
