Loyola College opened its doors in 1904 after seven Jesuit priests came to New Orleans and decided to open a Jesuit higher education institution. On July 10, 1912, an act was signed to change Loyola College to Loyola University which, today, is one of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. The university is ranked 196th in the 2021 edition of the U.S. News & World Report‘s Best National Universities, 61st in Best Undergraduate Teaching and 174th in Top Performers on Social Mobility. In addition, it claims the top spot in Forbes ranking for “Brainpower City” in the US. With academic affiliations with AJCU, ACCU, NAICO, CIC among others, Loyola University New Orleans is known to provide an outstanding academic and campus experience.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located in the Audubon Park District on St. Charles Avenue, now known as the Main Campus, is spread across an area of 26 acres. Every year, the university admits 5,000 students of which 3,000 are undergraduates, who are enrolled across the six colleges of arts & sciences, business, law, music+media, nursing & health and Loyola Online. The colleges connect students with over 60 majors and minors in a wide range of study areas. The Loyola University New Orleans campus comprises 130 student organisations, clubs and intramural sports; 11 Greek organisations, housing and dining facilities, student services and more, that contribute to pushing students to learn, invent, lead, think and dream.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Loyola University New Orleans graduates comprise notable politicians, entertainers along with important figures who made their mark in shaping US history. These include former members of the United States House of Representatives, Louisiana House of Representative and Louisiana State Senate. It has also produced numerous music celebrities such as G-Eazy and Harry Connick Jr. and others. The university is also known for its student-run weekly newspaper, ‘The Maroon’ that has been nominated 11 times for the National Peacemaker Award by the  Associated Collegiate Press and won the same seven times. The Wolf Pack, Loyal New Orleans’ team formerly competed in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Loyola New Orleans offers a premium college experience producing graduates that part of an international network of thousands of students from across the world. The university is highly recognised for its culturally diverse and inclusive community where students across all academic programs are given the opportunity to thrive. It also partners with a wide range of employers through campus interviews, career fairs, job postings and professional development events. Each student can visit the Career Development Centre to get assistance in finding jobs and internships while studying and upon graduation and explore as many career opportunities as they like.

COVID-19 Response

Loyola University New Orleans is looking forward to welcoming its students to campus, for which it has introduced a number of policies and plans. Read through to get an idea of the university’s response to COVID-19 for the 2021-22 academic year:

  • The university will offer on-campus learning with flexible learning options. High-risk students will be allowed to complete the course off-campus.

  • A number of changes have been made to the spring academic schedule which can be found on the university website.

  • All students living on campus during the academic year shall remain in the New Orleans area while classes are in session.

  • Flexible attendance and deadline policies will be maintained keeping in the mind the current situation.

  • Lab sessions may be offered virtually if need be.

  • Testing options are available at the Student Health Clinic by appointment for students, faculty and staff.

  • It is working closely with the Louisiana Department of Health to make the COVID-19 vaccine available for students, faculty, and staff as soon as possible.

  • A designated isolation room has been created in residence halls to keep resident students safe from the positive COVID-19 individuals.

Academic Merit Scholarships

Almost 99% of Loyola University students receive some form of financial aid. All incoming freshmen are considered for this scholarship.

Eligibility: Those interested in academic merit scholarships must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Must apply for admission to Loyola by February 15.

  • Must have an exceptional academic record.

Application Process: No separate application will be required.

First-Year Academic Scholarships

Loyola University New Orleans offers academic scholarships to all first-year applicants which are renewable for four years or eight academic semesters at the university.

Eligibility: Those interested in the First-Year Academic Scholarships must fulfil the following condition:

  • Must have obtained a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Value: $14,000 to $23,000 per year
Application Process: No separate application will be required.

Ignatian Scholarship for Academic Excellence

A prestigious scholarship, the Ignatian Scholarship for Academic Excellence is awarded to incoming freshmen with a 4-year tuition fee waiver along with other benefits.

Eligibility: Those interested in the Ignatian Scholarship for Academic Excellence must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Must have submitted a duly-filled admissions application with academic transcripts and a letter of recommendation.

  • Must have obtained a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

  • Must submit all application materials by December 1.

  • Must also attend an interview, if asked.

Value: Tuition fee waiver for four years, on-campus housing allowance.
Application Process: Submit the Ignatian application as well as the required short answer prompt.

International Student Scholarships

All international students may be able to apply for international student scholarships at Loyola.

Eligibility: Those interested in International Student Scholarships must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Must have obtained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

  • Should not be eligible/applying for federal need-based aid.

Value: $14,000 to $23,000 per year
Application Process: No separate application will be required.

College of Music and Media Scholarships (Majors Only)

These scholarships are open to only those who are applying to the university’s College of Music and Media.

Eligibility: Those interested in the College of Music and Media Scholarships (Majors Only) must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Must have auditioned, attended interviews or submitted portfolios.

  • Must have a good academic and artistic record.

Application Process: No separate application will be required.

Need-Based Loyola Grants

This is for those applicants who demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility: Those interested in the Need-Based Loyola Grants must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Must demonstrate financial need.

  • Students are encouraged to submit the appropriate FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by October 1 to get the maximum award.

Application Process: Complete the year-appropriate FAFSA.

Institutional Merit-Based Scholarships

Open to qualified transfer students, these scholarships are based on the applicant’s academic merit.

Eligibility: Those interested in the Institutional Merit-Based Scholarships must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Must be a transfer student with a competitive cumulative GPA.

  • Those with less than 12 credit hours will be required to submit their high school transcript.

  • Students currently do not need to submit SAT/ACT scores due to Covid-19.

Value: $9,000 to $16,000
Application Process: No separate application will be required.
