Officially known as I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, the First Moscow State Medical University was established in 1758, making it the oldest medical university in Russia. Informally, the university is known as Sechenov University or Moscow Medical University. What started as the medical faculty of Imperial Moscow University later became independent in 1930 and was renamed after the famous Russian physiologist, Ivan Sechenov in 1955. Accredited by both NMC and WHO, the university is an academic institution for training, certification and higher education in the field of medicine. In 2017, Sechenov University was ranked among the top 1000 medical universities in the world and 13th out of 24 Russian universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
Located at Devichye Pole in Moscow, MSMU is a historical medical campus comprising a total of 15 research institutes of Biomedical Science & Technology Park, 9 faculties and 20 buildings with classrooms and lecture halls. It also includes a research centre, publishing section, clinical centre, a video-photo department, library, laboratories, hostels and botanical garden. With a total 2,148 faculty members, the university offers 226 educational programs in 11 study areas within the faculties of medicine, pediatrics, pharmacy, preventive medicine, dentistry, postgraduate professional training of physicians, preparatory department for international applicants, centre of masters programs and institute of professional education.

The most renowned university alumni who have been recognised globally for their work in global medicine and other areas include Pirogov N.N., Sechenov I.M., Botkin S.P., Korsakoff S.S, Chekhov A.P. and Sklifosovsky N.V. Sechenov University is also the Russian co-chair of the Association of Sino-Russian Medical Universities and prides itself on being an active member of WHO, Eurasian Association of Universities, International Association of Universities, World Federation for Medical Education, European Health Management Association, International Health Center (USA), UK Research Council, German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, among others.
Student Diversity & Employment Opportunities
The First Moscow State Medical University hosts 19,030 students, out of which 3,500 are international students from around 90 countries. Around 1,500 FMSMU graduates are currently engaged in clinical internships, internships, other clinical specialties or postgraduate courses. The largest source countries of international students at the university include Malaysia, Azerbaijan, China, India, South Africa, Namibia, etc. The university has been training overseas students from across the world for more than 65 years, who have now assumed high ranks in national health systems or medical councils, become personal doctors, professors at medical colleges and so on.
