AIIMS Bhatinda Gets Government Clearance

The government has cleared the proposition of setting up a new AIIMS at Bhatinda, Punjab. It also stated that the new AIIMS will offer quality healthcare to the people and get a large pool of doctors in place for the welfare of the state.

AIIMS Bhatinda will be set up under the umbrella of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). It will have room for 750 beds, inclusive of emergency and trauma beds, AYUSH beds, private beds as well as the ICU speciality and super speciality beds.

The new institute will also comprise of an administration block, Ayush block, auditorium, night shelter, hostels and other residential facilities.

An official statement released by the authorities mentioned that the AIIMS Bhatinda is being developed to provide good healthcare facilities to the people of that region. With a group of qualified and proficient doctors, the city will have the best healthcare. Health workers will now be available for primary and secondary level institutions that will be created under National Health Mission (NHM).

Research based on predominant regional diseases and other health related problems will be conducted by the institute in order to provide better control and cure for these diseases, the statement added.

Rs. 925 crore will be the establishment cost for the new institute. This estimate does not include recurring costs such as salaries, operations and maintenance expenses. The institute will manage the recurring expenditure from its annual budgets through grant-in-aid that will be provided by them from PMSSY’s Plan budget head, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The time required to set up the new AIIMS will be 48 months from the date of the approval. It will require 15 months of pre-construction phase, a 30 months construction phase and stabilisation and commissioning phase of three months.

AIIMS have also been established in Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh under the PMSSY. Work to set up AIIMS Rae Bareli is still in progress.

The proposal to set up AIIMS in Kalyani (West Bengal), Mangalagiri in Guntur (A.P) and Nagpur (Maharashtra) was also cleared in 2015.
