4. What is point mutation? Give an example. Point mutation is a type of mutation where a single nucleotide base is substituted with another in a DNA sequence. Example: A change from ATCG to ATGG, where cytosine (C) is replaced by guanine (G).
5. What is meant by charging of tRNA? Charging of tRNA refers to the attachment of a specific amino acid to its corresponding transfer RNA (tRNA) molecule, catalyzed by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase enzyme.
6. Distinguish between heterochromatin and euchromatin. Which of the two is transcriptionally active? Heterochromatin is densely packed, transcriptionally inactive chromatin, whereas euchromatin is loosely packed, transcriptionally active chromatin. Euchromatin is the transcriptionally active form, allowing gene expression to occur.
7. Give one example for each of transgenic plants which are suitable for food processing and those with improved nutritional quality. Transgenic plant suitable for food processing: Golden Rice with modified starch for easier processing. Transgenic plant with improved nutritional quality: Golden Rice with enhanced beta-carotene (provitamin A) content to combat vitamin A deficiency.
8. What is the full form of PCR? How is it useful in biotechnology? PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction. It's useful in biotechnology for amplifying specific DNA sequences, allowing for the rapid generation of multiple copies of a gene or DNA fragment, which can be used for cloning, sequencing, and genetic engineering.
9. Why does Swiss cheese' have big holes? Name the bacteria responsible for it. Swiss cheese has big holes due to the production of carbon dioxide gas by bacteria during fermentation. The bacteria responsible for this is Propionibacterium freudenreichii.
10. Give two examples of fungi used in SCP production. Two examples of fungi used in Single Cell Protein (SCP) production are:
