Being the first in the country, Assam Govt. recently announced of providing completely free education for higher studies in Government colleges, higher secondary schools and diploma polytechnic institutions to those students whose parents earn less than Rs.1 lakh per annum from this year.

State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed "Free education is offered by several states in primary and secondary level but as far as I know, we have become the first to give this in higher secondary and above level."

Students enrolling from this year will be able to avail the benefits of this scheme and the same will continue in the next coming years.

According to the state government about 52,000 to 60,000 will be able to take admissions in higher secondary first year in colleges, class XI in higher secondary schools and first-year diploma courses in polytechnic institutes via this scheme.

Sarma also said that they won’t let educational institutes go in losses and will refund the loss incurred while admitting students free of cost. He also said that reimbursement of the money will take place within two months after they submit the statements to directorate of higher education.

To claim the benefits of this scheme, students will have to submit salary certificates or salary slips of their parents or certificates from circle officers incase parents do not have a source of earning.

Though if the student is not able to submit any of these document, the principals or the admission committees of the institutes can use their wisdom to grant them the benefit.
