Calicut University breaks the Fake Certificate Scam: Calicut University has uncovered a massive fake certificate scam, detecting 157 forged certificates in the past 4 years. These fake documents were primarily used for higher studies and employment, with private companies and educational institutions, both domestic and abroad, sending certificates to the university for verification.

The Tabulation Section of the university verified and confirmed the fake certificates, which spanned across various categories, including B Tech, BA, B Com, BSc, and PG. Since 2018, 39 cases have been handed over to the police, while the remaining ones are being kept aside for further action.

Identifying the source of these fake certificates has proven to be challenging, as they are often sent through agencies, making it difficult to obtain the individual's address. Furthermore, the registered numbers on the certificates are frequently incorrect, rendering it impossible to trace the person. The university's standard procedure is to inform both the institution that sent the certificate and the legal cell or police; however, this has not yielded significant results in many cases.

The university's syndicate had previously decided to make it mandatory to submit the applicant's personal details and a copy of an approved identity card along with the certificate sent for verification, but this has not been implemented yet. Additionally, the syndicate had denied the proposal to develop the university's own software for certificate verification in 2019, and currently, verification is carried out through private software systems.

This incident highlights the growing concern of fake certificate scams in India, with many individuals resorting to such measures to secure employment or admission to higher education institutions. The university's efforts to detect and prevent such scams are commendable, but it is imperative that more stringent measures are taken to curb this menace.
