Dental Council of India Recommends MBBS Bridge Course for BDS Students

  • The three-year MBBS course for BDS students will enable them to serve in rural areas for three to five years as full-fledged MBBS doctors.
  • The proposal is yet to receive clearance from the Medical Council of India.

TheDental Council of India (DCI)has recommended the central government to introduce a three-yearMBBS Bridge Coursefor BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) students so that would be eligible to take up a career as full-fledged MBBS doctors. President of DCI, Professor Dibyendu Majumdar revealed that BDS graduates who complete three-year MBBS Bridge Course could serve in rural areas across the country for four to five years. TheMedical Council of India (MCI)is yet to finalise the proposal of DCI, he confirmed.

The DCI has also urged the centre to give more significance to oral health care, as over 40 to 45% of all cancers are related tooral cavityalone. DCI further pointed that the central government allocated a huge budget for health, and there is a need to allocate separate budget to oral health too.

Professor Majumdar also indicated that central government had already agreed to the proposal of DCI to allowdental surgeonsissue death certificates in a case a patient died while undergoing treatment in a dental hospital or dental clinic.

Adding further, Professor Majumdar explained that the DCI is trying to make all the possible efforts to enabledental studentsexposed to lectures by eminent teachers. These lectures will be made available through the web. Dental colleges need not incur the cost of accumulating resources to provide web-based lectures to students, as DCI will bear the entire costs for this purpose, he concluded.
