DU Teachers Protesting Againt UGC

The Delhi University Teachers have been protesting for two weeks now. “The entire evaluation and result declaration process takes 30 days. Now with almost two weeks lost, the results would be delayed,” said an official of the examination department.

The teachers are protesting against the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) third amendment regulation and are now threatening to boycott the admission process. They have already boycotted the evaluation process since 24th May’16.

The teachers are protesting against the regulation as the terms of the notification which would cause around 5,000 ad-hoc teachers losing their jobs and make promotion difficult.

Since the teachers are threatening to boycott the admission process too, this thing can turn into a huge controversy.

UGC called the representatives of teachers across the country to consult and resolve this issue on Monday.

“The consultations went on for more than five hours but it is extremely unfortunate the UGC chairperson was not willing to concede anything more than what the ministry of human resource development had already stated in its press release. The UGC chairperson was unwilling to give any assurance on the academic performance indicator (API),” said Nandita Narian, DUTA president.

But no solution came out of the discussion so, the teachers are not stopping the protest.

This protest can result in delay results of DU’s undergraduate courses, which are usually out by June 30. This delay will affect the students who have to apply for postgraduate courses.

While the discussion thousands of teachers protested. They banged steel plates in a symbolic gesture to make the UGC and government hear their anguish.

DU teachers were joined by teachers from different other universities, students and even political leaders.

During the protest, JNU Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar was present and wanted to address the gathering but was not allowed as a lot of teachers were against it.

Deepender Hooda, chief whip of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, told the teachers that he would take up the issue in Parliament during the monsoon session.

Teachers said they will decide their future course of action at the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) general body meeting on Tuesday.
