According to the statistics revealed by Anna University, the number of dropouts in the field of engineering has increased to 50 percent since 2011-12. Earlier, engineering used to be one of the best career options for Science students in +2 level, but now, it has lost its alluring functionality. A total number of 3,000 engineering students quit their engineering studies mid-way between 2014-15. This number is alarming as in 2011 - 2012, only 2,100 students had left the course mid-way.

One of the officials mentioned that there are 540 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu under the affiliation of Anna University and some of the colleges, do not have the required faculty and quality infrastructure to train the budding engineers.

Most of the students aim to secure a decent job after their graduation, and all the colleges are not facilitated to provide good placement opportunities. Hence, most of the students struggle to search for a job even after completion of the course.

According to the report, most of the dropouts are either still hunting for jobs or are joining Arts courses. The reason is that the course fee for an Arts course is next to nothing of compared to an engineering course. In addition, the duration of these courses is just three years as compared to four in engineering. On the other hand, students who are hunting for jobs are having to compromise on their salary, as the current market is offering them a mere Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 salary.
