Six new Indian Institutes of Technology are on their way after getting approved by the Central Government on Monday. These new IIT’s will be set up at Palakkad (Kerala), Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Khanpur Nagrota (Jammu and Kashmir), Goa, and Dharwad (Karnataka). Academic Sessions in IIT Tirupati and IIT Palakkad have commenced in 2015.

The total cost for running these IITs would be 1,411.80 crore and will be incurred between 2015-16 and 2018-19.

These six new IITs have been approved as Registered Societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in order to give them a legal status.

The student count of these IIT’s will increase gradually in the coming years with an allowed intake of 180 students in its first year, then an increase to 450 in the second year and to 928 in the third year. The 16 exisiting IITs admit a total of 10,000 students at the undergraduate level. With the six new institutions, the intake will go up by another 1080 seats.

The main focus behind the same is to provide the students with quality education which was earlier available at only particular locations.

Old IIT’s have already crossed the bench mark set by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on April 4, which were based on various parameters, namely, teaching learning and resources, research professional practice & collaborative performance, graduation outcome, outreach & inclusivity and perception.

The new IITs will be operated from their temporary campuses for the initial period of three years before shifting into their permanent campuses in the fourth year. Each IIT will have a sanctioned strength of faculty members, with a faculty-student ratio of 1:10.
