The "Top 500" Strategy
If a student aims for Pharmaceutics at a top-tier NIPER or ICT, they must aim for a rank under 500.
Calculation: In 2025, this meant getting roughly 260+ marks.
Required Attempts in GPAR: Students should answer least 95–100 questions with 90% accuracy.
Mar 07, 2026 09:20 PM IST
NIPER Expected Cutoffs
Usually, the top 2,000–3,000 rankers in GPAT are the ones who realistically compete for the best branches (Pharmaceutics/Pharmacology) at NIPER Mohali or Hyderabad.
- Insight: In 2025, you need to score roughly 215+ to be in the Top 2,000.
- Advice for Students: If your rank is above 5,000, start looking at high-quality private universities or state-level counseling immediately, as the NIPER competition is extremely fierce.

GPAT Previous Years' Marks vs Rank: Category-Wise Disparity
Marks General Rank (2025) OBC-NCL Rank (2025) ~100 ~16,000 ~15,500 ~88 ~20,500 ~20,138 Insight: While the ranks are similar, the Category Rank (which isn't shown in the main merit list but appears on the individual scorecard) is what determines admission for reserved seats.
Advice for Students: If you are in a reserved category, your "All India Rank" (AIR) tells you where you stand globally, but your admission chances depend on how many people in your specific category scored higher than you.
Mar 07, 2026 08:40 PM IST
GPAT Marks vs Rank: The "Rank Inflation" Phenomenon
The most critical insight for students is that marks and ranks are not static. In 2025, there was a massive shift toward higher scores.
- Observation: A score that might have landed you in the Top 5,000 in 2024 (approx. 185 marks) only gets you around Rank 3,300 in 2025.
- Advice for Students: When looking at "Previous Year Cutoffs" for colleges like NIPER or ICT, never look at the marks. Always look at the Closing Rank. The marks required to reach that rank change every year based on paper difficulty, but the number of seats in top colleges remains almost constant.

Assertion-Reasoning Practice Question 4
Assertion (A): Ergot is a fungal sclerotium that contains indole alkaloids.
Reason (R): Indole alkaloids are biosynthetically derived from the amino acid Tryptophan.
Answer: Both A and R are true, but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: While both statements are facts, the amino acid precursor (Reason) does not explain why ergot is a fungal sclerotium (Assertion).

Assertion-Reasoning Practice Question 3
Assertion (A): p-Nitrophenol is more acidic than phenol.
Reason (R): The Nitro group exhibits a strong electron-withdrawing -I and -M effect, which stabilizes the phenoxide ion through resonance.
Answer: (a) Stabilization of the conjugate base (phenoxide ion) is the primary reason for increased acidity in organic chemistry.
Mar 07, 2026 05:00 AM IST
Assertion-Reasoning Practice Question 2
Assertion (A): Superdisintegrants like Crosspovidone are used in very low concentrations (2%–5%) compared to starch.
Reason (R): Superdisintegrants work by rapid swelling or wicking (capillary action), which leads to a much faster rupture of the tablet matrix.
Answer: (A) The efficiency of superdisintegrants allows them to be used at lower concentrations while providing superior performance to traditional starch.
Mar 07, 2026 04:30 AM IST
Assertion-Reasoning Practice Question 1
Assertion (A): With repeated use of certain drugs, the receptors may only respond to higher doses.
Reason (R): The tolerance level of the receptors increases, or the number of available receptors decreases (Downregulation) due to repeated activation.
Options:
- (a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
Answer: (a) This describes the classic mechanism of Drug Tolerance.

Critical Synthesis & SAR Points
- Lignocaine Synthesis: The starting raw material is 2,6-Xylidine.
- Chloroquine SAR: A withdrawing group at the 7th position of the quinoline ring (specifically Chlorine) is essential for its activity against hemozoin formation.
- 5-Fluorouracil: This anti-metabolite is a prodrug; it must be activated to 5-fluoro-2-deoxyuridylic acid to inhibit thymidylate synthase.
- Steroid Numbering: Remember that the Pregnane nucleus has 21 carbons, while Estrane has 18 and Androstane has 19.

Quick Summary of Medicinal Chemistry
Steroids: Understand the numbering of the phenanthrene nucleus. Note that substitution at C-17 typically determines the type of activity (e.g., estrogenic vs. androgenic).
Antibiotics: * Penicillins: The beta-lactam ring is essential. Acid stability is increased by electron-withdrawing groups at the alpha-position (e.g., Ampicillin).
Tetracyclines: These are amphoteric and chelate with metals, which is why they shouldn't be taken with milk.
Adrenergic Drugs: The presence of catechol (3,4-dihydroxybenzene) is crucial for potency but makes the drug susceptible to COMT metabolism.
Diuretics: Benzothiadiazides (Thiazides) require a sulfonamide group at position 7 for activity.
