HRD Ministry to Review IITs Tuition Fee Hike

The members of IIT Council opined that the fee hike from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 2 lakh per annum did not help in the revenue generation due to various reasons.

The government is planning to review the hike of tuition fee in IITs which came into force earlier. However, some of the IITs expressed the concern that the revised structure may lead to fall in revenue from fees. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development sent a circular to the IITs onSeptember 7, 2016. The note stated that the ministry had taken all the difficulties faced by the IITs into consideration and directed the institutes to cross check some of the income certificates submitted by the students to determine authenticity.

Ashok Mishra, the head of the Standing Committee of IIT Council said that there would be no hike in the fee this year. The changes may take place next year. Prakash Javadekar participated in the interaction with the heads of IITs onAugust 23, 2016. The members of IIT Council opined that the fee hike fromRs. 90,000toRs. 2 lakhper annum did not help in the revenue generation due to various reasons.

The IITs also mentioned that the decision taken by the government to provide interest-free loans where IITs have to pay the interest would be a burden to the institutes. The director ofIIT Roorkee,Mr.Pradipta Benerjeesaid that the exemptions had brought down the proportion of students paying full fee from 78% to merely 12-20%

So, the members of IIT Council requested the ministry has to review the new fee structure. Around 33% of students were exempted from paying the fee since the hike came into force. Last year, it was only22.5%
