HRD Sets Up Three-Member Committee to Avoid Vacancies in IIT, Institutes

The committee is expected to submit its report in three weeks and come up with solutions.

In order to come up with a solution for the vacant seats at top notch IITs and other technical institutes funded by central government, a three-member committee was set up by the HRD Ministry on Tuesday, 4th October.

The committee is expected to submit its report in three weeks after analysing the entire situation. Headed byIIT KharagpurDirector, Mr. Partha Pratim Chakraborty, the committee includes NIT Director and a ministry official.

Earlier this year, it was found out that the following number of seats were left vacant after the end of the joint counselling session.

Some of the various ideas to avoid vacancies in these institutes were:

  • No longer refund the amount paid by students to block the seats - (one lakh rupees). Since 95% of the amount is refunded by the institutes, students are not taking the blocking of admission seat seriously.
  • Also, students will be provided with a second chance to register again and choose fresh options after the session is started.

Another thing pointed out regarding the vacancies was that they are a part of the state quota and in the case of NITs set up in the northeast, students are reluctant to go there from other parts of the country.
