<p>With 6 students from Kerala Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) scripted a new chapter in the higher education sector in Kerala when finally its temporary campus in Palakkad opened on Monday.
The institutes enrolled 117 students for this academic session. The campus was opened at a function with Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani addressing the students through video conferencing.
The official opening ceremony of the campus would be held later this month, informed officials sources.
The institutes will offer four B-Tech streams - Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering – in its first academic session.
Sources revealed that the new campus would be shifted to a 500-acre permanent campus in Puthussery in the district in three years, after completion of the land acquisition process and construction of buildings, the sources said. The classes will continue in the temporary campus near Valayar till the new building is ready.
While Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT-T) is all set to start its academic year (2015-16) at a temporary building on Wednesday with 120 students. There will be civil, computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering with 30 seats in each branch.
IIT Madras is the mentoring agency for the new institution. A three-storey building on the sprawling campus of Krishna Teja Group of Educational Institutions on Renigunta Road has been allocated to function for IIT Tirupati.
Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani will address students through video-conference on the occasion.
The opening ceremony will have a formal welcome address, a brief on the nature of the courses offered, rules to be followed by students and the credit system in vogue.
K.N. Satyanarayana, Professor-in-charge of IIT-Tirupati said “We are bringing some senior faculty members from IIT-Madras to train students here,”
These IITs are being established as a part of government’s announcement of setting up of five new IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Goa and Jammu.
