Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Hyderabad has sought legal opinion for de-affiliating colleges and likely to take legal action for their failure to pay the 'common service fee'.

“About 150 of the 350 colleges affiliated to JNTU owe nearly Rs 55 crore. Most of these colleges have not paid a single rupee despite having collected the amount from students. Number of colleges have dues to the tune of Rs 30 to 40 lakh even after JNTU had sent repeated reminders asking the managements to pay up,” said an official of JNTU.

“We have already taken legal opinion on the issue and once the examinations are over, we will initiate the process to de-affiliate the errant colleges. Some colleges owing huge dues are citing the delay in receiving fee reimbursement from the Telangana government as the reason for non-payment of the 'common service fee,” said the same official.

The JNTU registrar informs that the University had even gave the colleges a chance to pay at least 15 per cent of the dues. The colleges have already collected the amount from students but are not remitting it to the university.

On the other hand colleges have alleged that the university authorities are refusing to give the required stationery for conducting examinations, university officials denied holding back the stationery for conducting practical examinations on account of pending common service fee.

While on the part of the University they said, “The colleges have not turned up to collect stationery from the examination branch as per the schedule. The students' interest is of utmost importance to us and, hence, we are ensuring that there is no impact on the examinations.”
