NCERT revises Class 12 Political Science: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has included a new reference to China’s aggression in the Class 12 Political Science textbook, making a significant update to the senior secondary curriculum. The change has been introduced as part of NCERT’s periodic review mechanism to bring the textbooks in line with the current political and international situation.

As per the updated content, the reference has been added in chapters on India’s foreign policy and international relations , where India’s growing relations with its neighbours are analysed. While the Class 12 Political Science text describes the India–China relationship in neutral terms and speaks in broad terms about “a border dispute” between the two countries, the language has been hardened in this year’s NCERT edition. In the new edition, this wording has been modified to say that ‘Chinese aggression along the Indian border had adversely affected bilateral ties’, a subtle care for tone and interpretation.

These changes have garnered attention as NCERT textbooks are a common source material for CBSE schools and, at times, even shape the academic discourse in the country. Proponents of the revision say that informing students about recent events concerning China will help them understand the real challenges in India's foreign policy. They see that protecting students from real-time geopolitical tensions limits critical thinking and consciousness.

The revision has been made considering the crucial role that textbooks play in shaping the perception of students of history, diplomacy, and international relations . By using stronger and more direct language, the revised version is expected to better represent India’s position on historical and present-day border disputes with China, instead of providing a view that could be seen as neutral or ambiguous.

NCERT has maintained that the revision is academic in nature and does not lead to any political bias. It is intended to help students have a clearer, facts-based understanding of the challenges in India’s foreign policy. Teachers have also been instructed to put the topic in context in classrooms and encourage a balanced debate so that students are asked to look at the subject analytically.
