NMC Opens Applications for New Medical Colleges, Additional Seats and Fee Structure
The NMC has opened applications for new medical colleges and MBBS seat expansion for the 2026–27 academic year. Eligible institutions can apply online from December 29, 2025, to January 28, 2026.
NMC released Applications for New Medical Colleges: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has invited applications for the establishment of new medical colleges/extension of MBBS seats/implementation of revised fee structure for the academic year 2026-27. It comes as part of the government’s larger initiative to bolster medical education infrastructure in the country amid rising demand for trained doctors in India. Applications will be available from December 29, 2025, to January 28, 2026, through the official NMC portal.
The NMC has informed eligible institutions to submit applications for the grant of permission to start new medical colleges or for the increase of intake capacity in existing colleges for the UG MBBS programme. The application process shall be online, and the institutions shall comply with the modified norms and standards as stipulated by the commission. This includes infrastructure, number of faculty, hospital facilities to be made available to students, student-teacher ratio, and availability of clinical materials.
NMC Approval to New Medical Colleges: Who Can Apply?
The NMC has specified that the following entities are eligible to apply for applying for establishment of a new Medical College / MBBS seat expansion for the year 2026-27:
- State Governments/Union Territories for new Government Medical College.
- Universities or Trusts / Societies registered under the relevant laws that are willing to establish new private medical colleges.
- Existing Government Medical Colleges as per NMC norms to increase MBBS seats.
- Existing Private Medical Colleges, seeking the expansion of MBBS seats, are subject to the availability of requisite infrastructure, faculty, and hospital facilities.
- Deemed-to-be Universities (as per UGC Norms), which plan to commence new Medical Colleges or existing ones that wish to expand MBBS seats
Fee Structure for New Medical Institutions and Seats Enhancement For Existing Colleges
The fee structure has been different for both categories (Establishment of New Institution and Existing Institutions to Enhance UG Seats) based on the type of institution (Government/Private), along with the number of seats

Note:
- In addition to these deposits, the institutions also need to deposit 18% GST on the principal amount
- The Existing Institutions need to pay a non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 2 lakh
Key eligibility conditions include adequate land, teaching hospital facilities, strength of faculty, clinical material, laboratories, hostels and in the matter of NMC guidelines regarding infrastructure and standards of education. The applications are to be made online with the requisite fee and the supporting documents, and the permission will be granted only after in-depth scrutiny and evaluation by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC.
