Strike Derails PG Medical Academic Session at KGMU

The strike by medical students protesting against admissions through Uttar Pradesh Postgraduate Medical Entrance Examination (UPPGMEE) 2016 has delayed the new academic session by a month in King George's Medical University (KGMU) and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS).

While the vice-chancellor of KGMU, Ravi Kant announced on Wednesday that its PG academic session will now begin from July 1, RMLIMS chief medical superintendent, Dr Subhrat Chandra said, "We have asked the newly-admitted PG students to come for classes from July 1, the official notification in this regard will be issued later." KGMU has over 100 seats and RMLIMS has 18 seats.

SGPGI, however, has begun its sessions. Four of the PMHS candidates have started attending classes but the seven non-PMHS candidates have not joined yet.

There were speculations that the sessions might be delayed across the state by the end of the week and not just Lucknow. UPPGMEE is the gateway to 526 PG seats in 12 medical institutes across UP. The session had started on May 2 following admissions on the basis of the first UPPGMEE merit list.

However, these admissions were cancelled on May 26 following a Supreme Court order which directed authorities to draw a revised list after allotting upto 30% additional marks to candidates from Provincial Medical Health Services (PMHS) who have served in rural areas. The SC had also directed to complete admissions by May 31.
