In order to highlight the problems faced by the residents of the Panjab University, the National Student Union, girls’ wing staged a protest.
According to the protestors, the Panjab University hostels not only haveunhygienic washrooms, but also theelectrical equipment and devices are in improper condition.
Also the poor quality of food, ill maintainedbuildings and lack of basic amenitieswere some of the reasons behind the protests.
Currently, the Panjab University consists of 17 hostels in which about 8000 students reside. There are eight hostel buildings for boys and nine buildings for girls.
Despite of a special mess committee, a dietician at the Panjab University, the students arenot happy with the quality of food servedto them.
Another demand of the students is to change the menu of the mess after a while. They complain that they have to eat the same dish every day as the chef repeats the dishes. The students pay Rs.35 for one meal at the hostel mess.
Removing all allegations, the Dean Student Welfare Nandita Singh said thatregular visits are made to the hostelalong with surprise inspections to keep a check on the quality of food served to the students. She also said that she will raise this issue with the committee and they will take the required steps if needed. Moreover, the committee will let thestudents decide on what they want toincludein their hostel mess menu. Over the past years, PU has received many complaints regarding the deteriorating condition of the hostels.
