University Grants Commission’s (UGC) third amendment regulation, a disputed initiative, pulled deep in trouble. After boycotting the evaluation process since 24th May, teachers of Delhi University have now threatened to boycott the admission process.

DU’s undergraduate courses results will probably deferred because of these protests and so will the admissions of the students who have applied for postgraduate courses.

The protest seem to have fueled with teachers threatening to boycott the admissions. The reason behind the protest is the fear that the notification terms might cause loss of job for 5,000 ad-hoc teachers and make promotion difficult.

Taking the protests into account, UGC called representatives of teachers from all over the country to talk about the regulation on Monday. Failing to assure the teachers with a substantial solution, UGC now faces stronger protests from the teachers.

“The entire evaluation and result declaration process takes 30 days. Now with almost two weeks lost, the results would be delayed,” as told by an official of the examination department.

Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) general body meeting met on Tuesday to decide their future course of action.

Nandita Narian, President, DUTA said, “The consultations went on for more than five hours but it is extremely unfortunate the UGC chairperson was not willing to concede anything more than what the ministry of human resource development had already stated in its press release. The UGC chairperson was unwilling to give any assurance on the academic performance indicator (API).”

Various teachers from other universities, students and politicians stand in support of DU teachers in the protests.

Deepender Hooda, Chief Whip of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, assured the teachers that he would take up the issue in Parliament during the monsoon session.
