The members of University Grants Commission (UGC) recently presented a detailed view of how towns and cities are emerging as key drivers of economic growth and stressed upon the need for capacity building in Urban Administration and Urban Planning to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In this spirit, UGC asked all the Universities and colleges all over India in a letter to add a subject on Urban Planning from the current academic year i.e. the academic year of 2016.
This idea was given out after the execution of the project ‘Smart City’ by the central government.
Vice-chancellors of University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jaspal Sandhu in his letter to the Universities and colleges of India said that it has been proposed that colleges and Universities should start a subject or course on Urban Planning. He also conveyed necessary instructions to the Universities, colleges, and institutes affiliated to the university to take urgent steps to start this subject or course at postgraduate level.

UGC give out recognition to the Universities in India and disburses funds to such recognised universities and colleges.
