10 Lakh Youths to get Engineering Skill Training in Three Years’ Time

Over the course of three years from now over ten lakh young students would get trained in engineering skills through the AICTE approved engineering colleges and polytechnics in the country. The HRD ministry is encouraging the institutions to make the most out of the existing infrastructure and impart higher education to the students and provide skill training during the ‘off hours’. This initiative has been taken under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Kaushalya Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).

Under the National Occupational Standards the school dropouts, who are willing to learn the higher order skills and live at the vicinity of the colleges will now have a chance to learn and get certifiable skills. The entire cost that includes the cost of the trainers, recurring cost of the maintenance of the faculty, cost of placement and post placement cost would be borne by the HRD ministry. The ministry is also working on a web based management information online system (MIS) to monitor student enrolment records, trainer’s profile, monthly attendance record of the students, number of dropouts and its reasons, assessment reports for monthly test and re-enrolment of students.

In accordance with the blueprint of the plan initially 500 colleges would train 25 students per college each in the year 2015-16. In the next year the number of colleges would increase to 1000 colleges with each college training 100 students. In 2017-18 the number of colleges would increase to 2000 offering training to 100 students each and in the subsequent year there would be 5000 colleges. Thus in the span of three years the total number of students undergoing the skill development program would surpass 10 lakh.
