The 18 students expelled for poor marks have been accepted by the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee. Most of these students were reserved candidates who had a CGPA less than 5. The event took a rather aggressive turn and went out of control. Eventually, the MHRD had to intervene to sort things out.

The decision was made during a marathon senate meeting that continued from 3 pm to 9 pm on Thursday, August 12. The students were accepted back to the institute and given another chance.

Pramod Agarwal, Dean, IIT-Roorkee said that the students have been reaccepted and have been given another chance to prove themselves.

Prashant Garg, Registrar, IIT-Roorkee said that they have taken the decision keeping in mind that the students belong to the weaker sections of the society. They have been given another opportunity despite the fact they had signed the undertaking that asks them to secure a CGPA above 5, he added.

Students were overwhelmed and felt elated when the news came out and accepted the second chance with gratefulness and determination.

In the meeting of the Senate held on Friday, it was also decided that the administration will look back and will work on the changes that need to be incorporated in the CGPA system so that issues like these don’t repeat themselves. In 2015, 72 students were expelled from the institute as they were not able to abide by the undertaking that requires them to score a CGPA above 5. Followed by the aggressive protests on the campus and on the social media, the institute had to take back the students that it had expelled.
