AMU Students Seek Minority Status for University
- Students of AMU ask for President's intervention in order to get Minority Status for University.
- The stated that the sentiments of the students studying in AMU must be considered.
Students ofAligarh Muslim Universityare looking forward to the President's visit at theconvocation on 7 March 2018. They have been prevailing upon the NDA government to grant the minority status to the university.
Students submitted the memorandum stating that their sentiments should be given a thought and consideration and that the President should help the university to get the status of a minority institute. As per the memorandum submitted by the students, theminority statusof AMU is very critical for the entireMuslim communityas it is the very essence of the institute. They have also appealed for the strict and effective measure to prevent atrocities and violence against Muslims and Dalits as theviolenceagainst them is increasing day-by-day.

As per the reports, for the past four years, there had been an increase in organised violence in the form of mob lynching and the violence against Dalits has also increased. Apart from this, there has been a considerable increase in the violence against other minorities and marginalised sections of the society that has led to prevalent fear among these group of society.

Students ofAMUhave also demanded the release offunds for AMUcentres at Mallapuram, Murshidabad, and Kishanganj. These centres are facing a huge financial crunch due to non-allocation of the total sanctioned budget. The total sanctioned budget for these centres was around Rs. 349 crores. However, they have only been sanctioned a sum of Rs 130 crore till now.
