The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for EAMCET counselling till October 7, 2016, to fill up vacant medical seats in various colleges across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. A bench comprising of Justice Lalit and Justice Anil R. Dave heard the arguments in this regard from the state governments and extended the deadline. Previously, Medical Council of India (MCI) announced that the state governments have to fill up the medical seats by September 30, 2016.

TS Mukul Rohatgi, Counsel for Telangana, argued that EAMCET 2 examination paper got leaked and the government was forced to hold reexamination, i.e., EAMCET 3 which had resulted in a delay. AP Rajgopal, counsel for Andhra Pradesh, argued that the medical admissions in Andhra Pradesh have been affected due to admission provisions under the clause 371 D which stated that 15 percent of seats were to be filled with non-locals.

However, the MCI opposed the petitions made by the two governments as it might lead to similar demands from other states too. Finally, SC considered the plea of state governments and extended the deadline.

The third phase of medical seat allotment in Telangana commenced on September 29, 2016. The counselling began at 6.00 AM. the government has given approval for medical seats in Mallareddy Medical College for Women.
