<p>With the increasing number of road accidents in the city, Assam Government has recently asked IIT-Guwahati to intervene and suggests ways and means for curbing the growing menace of road accidents in the state.
Expressing his disappointment about increasing road accidents in Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, “Government has asked IIT-G to come up with a comprehensive plan to curb the menace”, according to an official release.
"Our Government has viewed seriously the rising incidents of road accidents taking place in different parts of the state leading to loss of scores of precious lives," the release said quoting Gogoi.
Moreover, he also directed the Transport Department to be stringent in issuing driving licences and fitness certificate to vehicles.
Gogoi instructed the department to be strict in verifying papers and documents while issuing driving licences as rash driving has been one of the key factors for rising road accidents in the State.
“Stringent action must be taken against drivers who are under the alcoholic influence and involved in fatal accidents. Licences must be impounded for flagrant violation of road safety rules and putting lives of people at peril,” said the CM.
He advised to initiative a drive against heavy vehicles plying on city roads without valid fitness certificates. “The motor transport inspectors will not only check the fitness of vehicles but will also examine if vehicles have reflective tapes and tail lamps in working condition,” Gogoi said.
“To avoid such mishaps, the inspectors will check if tail lamps are working and reflective tapes are fixed on either side of vehicles. The inspectors have to create awareness among the drivers on safe driving and instruct them to follow all necessary safety measures during night driving to avoid accidents,” Gogoi added.
