BBAU to Monitor Web Activities of Students

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) is now aiming to monitor their students web activities by restricting free access to the Internet by providing them with a user name and password.

According to officials they are aiming to monitor web activities of all those who log in as well as to curb the tendency of watching pornographic material. University spokesperson Kamal Jaiswal informed us that they are in the process of installing the UTM software with which they will be able to monitor all online activities and thus check misuse of the facility.

According to officials, the foolproof system will also keep outsiders at bay, besides helping maintain the sanctity of the educational institution by banning the immoral indulgence. UTM allows the administrator to monitor and manage a wide variety of security-related applications and infrastructure components from a single management console.

Apart from knowing what is being browsed, the university will also, via the IP address, get to know the area where the user is browsing. For example, if the student teacher is browsing a website sitting inside the auditorium, the university will be able to track them down.

As per official records, YouTube is the most sought after browser at BBAU with as many as 38% users browsing and downloading content daily. The total bandwidth of YouTube per day on the campus is 100 GB. This is followed by Torrent which gets next to maximum hits, 4%, by users.

Presently, the university has Wi-Fi facility in the library, auditorium, administrative blocks and some departments. The facility is being extended to hostels and other departments.

The move is expected to restrict downloading heavy movies and gaming files. With the process of strengthening Internet connectivity, the university has rationed net usage on its campus.
