The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has revised some of its rules and regulations from the academic session of 2019-2020. One of the changes brought about by the Board is that the CBSE will have two separate exams for class 10th Mathematics now. The option of Basic Mathematics was introduced by the Board which will be a separate subject for the board examinations of class 10th from 2020 onwards. Students who do not wish to opt for mathematics in class 11th can choose to give the basic maths examination while those who will opt for maths after 10th will have to give the advanced mathematics exam in their CBSE class 10th board exams.

CBSE Board Exam 2020: 6 Lakh Students to Appear for Basic Mathematics in Class 10

Out of the 19 lakh candidates appearing for class 10 CBSE board exams 2020, around 6 lakh students will appear for basic mathematics in class 10. Only 32% of the students across the country will appear for Basic Mathematics paper in class 10 board exams whereas 68% of the candidates will appear for the standard mathematics class 10 paper.

Basic Mathematics is a simpler mathematics paper approved by the Board for the students who do not wish to continue the subject in their higher secondary classes. This decision was taken by the CBSE after considering the feedback they received over the years. As per reports, the decision is also becoming quite popular as Basic Mathematics has become a success among the students. Different CBSE schools have revealed that about 50 percent of the total students of class 10th have opted for the subject of Basic Mathematics. However, the exact number of applications for the subject has not been confirmed yet. A senior teacher from a CBSE school in Delhi NCR said that the trend of students opting out of mathematics after class 10th is catching up.

The teacher also laid emphasis on the fact that Basic Mathematics was a subject that was favoured more by the students, even by those students who do not have a concern in the subject. CBSE made a good decision by approving this as the option has given the students who do not want to continue with maths in class 11th and 12th a choice to opt-out of it. Apart from that, the teacher also pointed out that opting for Basic Mathematics will ensure that the students manage to get a higher aggregate percentage in the board examinations.

Many teachers from other CBSE schools have also confirmed a similar trend among the students. In many cases, the parents have also requested to go with Basic Mathematics instead of Standard Mathematics. If the student has opted for Basic Mathematics and wishes to pursue maths in class 11th and 12th as well, he/ she can appear for the examination of Standard Mathematics in the July Compartment Exam.

However, some teachers are perceiving the move of having two mathematics papers in a different way. While a section of teachers have the belief that Basic Mathematics is setting a wrong lead, some others believe that it is a step taken towards improving the standards of examination in the country. It has been stated by one of the teachers that although they are not against the idea of providing the power of choice to students, the part that they are worried about is the increased number of students opting out of the subject. They are choosing not even to try which some teachers find to be a bit troublesome.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will commence the board exams of class 10th and 12th in February 2020. Separate exams will be taken for Basic Mathematics and Standard Mathematics for students of class 10th from this academic year onwards. Although the syllabus of both subjects will remain the same, the question paper of Basic Mathematics will be much simpler as compared to that of Standard Mathematics.
