CBSE to Conduct National Eligibility Test (NET) Only Once a Year

Instead of conducting the National Eligibility Test (NET) twice, CBSE has proposed to organise it once every year. To clarify doubts regarding July 2017 NET, the UGC has announced that the exam will be conducted by CBSE.

The board had earlier expressed its inability to conduct the exam due to capacity crunch. NET is conducted to select candidates for awarding the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The exam is also a qualifying standard to work as a teacher at colleges and universities across India.

As per the sources close to the discussion, the proposal is in its early phases and will be analysed on the basis of the resources required to organise the exam as well as the number of candidates who write the exam.

Another source added that conducting the exam once a year will make the candidates appear for the exam more seriously. The source also stated that conducting NET once a year will also help in utilising the resources judiciously as conducting a national level exam is a crucial task.

The suggestion was made by the CBSE after observing that only 17% of the registered candidates appear for the exam and only 4% qualify the exam.

Currently, NET is conducted twice every year i.e. in July and January. The issues had been presented in front of the HRD Ministry by CBSE. The Ministry and UGC have clarified that CBSE will be conducting the exam until the proposed National Testing Service (NTS) starts functioning.
