After the board exams for Class10th become compulsory for all CBSE students from next year onward, three language formula could be extended till Class 10th and a foreign language might be treated as elective or fourth as per the decision.

At the meeting of Governing body of CBSE, its all the members agreed that from the next academic session starting from 2017-18, Class 10th Board exams should be introduced as compulsory for all students of Class 10th. Now the decision will have to be approved by the government before its implementation.

CBSE also decided to suggest to the HRD ministry that the three language formula of English, Hindi and one Indian language should be extended to class IX and X from the present VI to VIII. Under the National Policy on Education 1986 and recommendations made by the CBSE governing body, the Board adopted the three-language formula.

R K Chaturvedi, CBSE Chairman said that these recommendations are made by a governing body. The government will examine it and decide after that. The three-language formula is prioritizing the languages listed in the 8th schedule of the Constitution.

Right now, it is optional for students studying in the CBSE Board to choose a school-based examination or the Board exam. Prakash Javadekar, Human Resource Development Minister has in the past announced that like all other states, the board exam would be made compulsory for CBSE students also.
