Centre to Streamline Functioning of Private Universities

Continuing its initiatives to promote quality education in India, the central government is now focusing on streamlining the functioning of private universities in the country. For this purpose, Ministry of Human Resource Development has approached NIEPA (National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration) to constitute a working group comprising academic experts to study the functioning of private universities in India.

Issues to be examined by NIEPA Working Group:

• The committee will examine the laws that empower the private universities to function with autonomy.
• Apart from these, the working group will also examine the mechanism in place to monitor the functioning of private universities.
• The working group will look into the fee regulation policy adopted by the different state governments with respect to private universities.

Based on the recommendations submitted by the working group, the ministry will plan the future course of action to revamp the existing regulatory framework for private universities. The revised regulations will also focus on improving quality and standards in private universities across the country. The government will make sure that these universities maintain grievances cell to address the issues of students and teachers.

The central government has come with this move due to various complaints received against the exorbitant fee structure, appointment of faculty and delay in the payment of salary to staff members.

At present, there are close to 233 private universities in India. The central government, to regulate these universities, must adopt a robust mechanism.
