A team of students from DTU (Delhi Technological University) has developed software that will help visually disabled people to operate computers with just movements of their heads and blinks of their eyes. The software has been named as ‘Sysbot’, by the team comprising four students. Recently, Women in Engineering of IEEE organised a Hackathon and invited the students of DTU, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology and IP University to participate in the event.

These institutes were asked to come up with innovative ideas and solutions to the contemporary problems faced by disabled people. In all, 200 students (50 teams) took part in the competition.

‘Sysbot’ is unique software through which a disabled person using it can move the cursor on the desktop with the movement of his/her head, and click the mouse with the blink of the eye. The software developed received wide appreciation, and won first prize in the Hackathon. However, the software is under the stage of observation and testing, and it may need at least 10-15 days of work to become fully functional.

The Hackathon was announced on October 27, 2017. During the event, the participants were given 24 hours to develop or build a tool in the next 24 hours. The designs were evaluated by a team of experts to select the winners of the contest. Apart from ‘Sysbot’, another winning team developed a ‘Pathfinder’ app for visually disabled people.
