After Restricting EWS Quota, DU exempts 5 Games from Sports Quota

The Delhi University (DU) academic council excludes 5 sports including Baseball and Yoga from the Sports Admissions Category. The approved list of sports has come down to 27 from 33.

The Administrative Council of the University of Delhi (DU) has identified 5 sports activities from its sports or EWS Quota. A member of the Delhi University (DU) Standing Committee, Dr. Rasal Sigh said that the university will only constitute games and sports quota in the games that are a player in Commonwealth, Asiad and Olympic games. Similarly, there will be 5 games and sports which will be excluded from the sports quota, the inclusions are korfBall, softball, ball badminton, handminton, baseball, and yoga. Though yoga falls under ‘Extra Curricular Activities.’

Apart from the Commonwealth, Asiad and Olympic games, sports such as cricket, kho-kho, and chess will remain in the sports quota. Previously, the sports quota of Delhi University recognised 33 sports but now it will recognise only 27.

The affiliated colleges are expecting a fall in the sports quota as the Delhi University already proposed 1% seats for ECA or Extra Curricular Activities quota from the total 5% allocated in EWS sports quota. The total seats under the Delhi University combining ECA and EWS are 3,100.

The proposals sent to the academic council of Delhi University are as follows,

  • The Delhi University will conduct entrance examinations in all the subjects in English and Hindi except the language subjects. The proposal put emphasises mostly on humanities subjects
  • Increase in the quota for wards of teaching and non-teaching staff
  • The students from rural areas and government schools to be given 1% cut off reservation
