Delhi University’s law faculty is running short on time. They are left with two weeks to update their infrastructure and appoint teachers as per the directions of the Delhi High Court in order to get an affiliation from the Bar Council of India (BCI).

Current, the law faculty has been working without an affiliation from the regulatory body of law education in India, BCI.

DU law faculty’s affiliation was cancelled in 2014 by BCI considering their poor infrastructure and violation of norms at the time. Many students of law faculty had moved to court in search of justice. The students were also against the university’s proposal to shift all three centres to a new building.

The law centre was ordered to fix all the things that are violating the norms in May. The court ordered that an infrastructure should be in place such as white or black boards, essential furniture, offices, halls, and staff rooms they were also asked to address to the problems mentioned by the Delhi Fire Service by June 28.

The BCI is supposed to examine the new building between June 29 and July 7 and verify if the instructions have been followed or not. The council had also issued a show-cause notice related to the same on May 27.

From this year, the new building at Chattra Marg will be identified as the university law centre. The existing law faculty will remain in place and will not be affected by the new building.

As per the high court, the university’s three law centres will be operating from the new building as well as law faculty. Deepak Vats, is appointed as the nodal officer by the court. He will ensure if the building is ready to start operations or not.

The university has been working to meet the BCI norms in order to get affiliation. As per an official, the university administration is trying their best to prepare for the verification before the commencement of the academic session on 24th July.
