DUSU Polls: ABVP Sweeps, NSUI and APP Weep

<p>Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) the student wing of BJP swept Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections winning all four positions with huge a margin in each seat.
This is for the second consecutive times Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the DUSU election.
Candidates of the Congress’ National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) got the second highest number of votes for the posts of president, secretary and joint-secretary while new entrant CYSS -the AAP’s student wing managed to make a mark came third position but its candidate for the vice-president’s post got the second highest number of votes.
Satender Awana, who secured 20,439 votes, defeated NSUI’s Pradeep Vijayran by a margin of more than 6,000 votes. ABVP’s Sunny Dedha won the vice-president’s post with 19,671 votes, defeating CYSS’s Garima Rana by over 7,000 votes.
ABVP’s Anjali Rana and Chhattarpal Yadav also defeated their opponents — NSUI’s Amit Sehrawat and Deepak Choudhary — for the posts of secretary and joint-secretary by a margin of more than 4,000 and 6,000 votes respectively.
“Our primary agenda now is to start new colleges and hostels. We will also work towards ensuring women’s security and safety on campus,” said Satender Awana.
All India Students’ Association (AISA) which had made significant gains in the last election saw a dip in its vote share.
While accepting the verdict NSUI blamed the CYSS for eating into its vote share and “helping BJP”. On the other hand CYSS vice-president Anmol Panwar said, “Contesting the election for the first time we managed to pull 35,000 votes which is itself a record though we are disappointed not getting the seats.”
After the results were announced on senior BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah also took to Twitter to congratulate the winners.
The polling was held in two phases and it saw a turnout of over 43 per cent. A total of 1,35,298 students were eligible to exercise their franchise.
