A two-day nationwide general strike on January 8th and 9th by the central trade unions may affect thousands of students appearing for the JEE Main in the second week of January.

JEE Main will be held twice this year from January 8th-January 12th (first attempt) and from April 8th-April 12th (second attempt). Therefore, students who have to take the tests on January 8th and 9th will find it very hard to reach the exam venue as all the transport facilities will be affected.

The National Testing (NTA) is responsible for conducting the JEE exam. Vineet Joshi, NTA Director said they are not thinking of rescheduling the exams, but they will be having a meeting to discuss the matter. The strike, which was announced in September is being supported by more than 10 central trade unions such as INTUC, CITU, HMS, AITUC, SEWA, TUCC, AICCTU, UTUC, LPF, NFIR and AIRF.

The union leaders said they had no idea about the entrance exam falling on these dates. R Chandrasekharan, INTUC State President said this strike was announced earlier and now they won’t be able to change the dates for the strike.

The Trade Unions have requested the HRD Ministry to reschedule the dates of JEE Main 2019.

TPM Ibrahim Khan, President of Kerala CBSE Schools Management Association said that they were not aware of this matter and now they don’t know whom to give a representation as this is a national strike.

Gregorian Public School’s Principal Jayaprabha Pradeep said she wasn’t aware of the issue but said there isn’t much that schools can do about the issue. But she’s hoping the strike gets postponed as parents are also worried because of the transport woes that may happen.

Brilliant Study Centre’s Director Pala Ramachandran said students are concerned by the strike so they are hoping the test dates get postponed so that students do not face any inconvenience. Even though students have been allotted test centres of their choice, transport may be an issue as the strike will continue for two days.
