The government of Goa has decided to drop the plan to construct the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Goa campus at Canacona village which is situated in northern part of the state since the locals were quite anxious about the proposal.

The proposal of Goa government to built an IIT at Canacona had run into rough weather after some locals revolted as they did not want to part away their land for the project.

Manohar Parrikar, the Chief Minister of the state told the reporters that the people of Canacona are tensed about having an IIT campus in their area. He added that though their apprehensions are wrong, the state government has arrived at the conclusion to look for an alternate place for this project.

The CM said the government has various options to carry out this project including the plan to construct the IIT campus at Ponda Taluka, where already two huge tracts of land are under consideration. He informed that the location for constructing IIT campus will be finalised by the next month. He further added that the project requires around 10 to 11 lake square metres land.

Parrikar expressed that it would be beneficial for Goa to have such a premium institute in the state.

Meanwhile, the state cabinet in a meeting granted it's approval to transfer 4,56,767 square meter land at Cuncolim to Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for establishing National Institute of Technology (NIT) after the Ministry assured the state government to reserve 40 percent of the seats for the state quota.
