High Court Directs IIT Indore to File Response on Status of Ph.D. Admissions

The High Court of Madhya Pradesh has issued notices of Indian Institute of Technology, Indore to file a response on the status of Ph.D. admissions by December 22, 2017. The HC's decision came after part-time Ph.D. aspirants were denied to apply for the Ph.D. courses at IIT Indore. The Indore bench of HC further directed IIT Indore that the admissions to Ph.D. courses, for which interviews were conducted on December 18, 2017, will also be subject to the decision on the petition.

A part-time Ph.D. aspirant, Mr. Krishna Vidhani, filed the petition. The petitioner claimed that IIT Indore had issued an advertisement for the admission to Ph.D. courses on December 4, 2017. The aspirants were given a week time to register for the Ph.D. course. However, IIT Indore did not allow the students interested in the external category during the online application process. The petitioner had submitted the screenshot of form submission page to HC. Finally, the court ordered an interim stay on full-time Ph.D. admissions, after considering the plight of part-time Ph.D. aspirants.

The petitioner further pointed that IIT Indore prefers full-time Ph.D. students rather than enrolling part-time Ph.D. students. Full-time Ph.D. students can help the institute by taking classes or assisting the faculty in other activities. IIT Indore had just issued an advertisement for the admission to part-time Ph.D. courses and conducted interviews for the same. However, IIT Indore does not want to accept part-time Ph.D. students, alleged by the petitioner.

Director of IIT Indore, central government and HOD of Civil Engineering Department at IIT Indore have been made respondents to the petition.
