HRD Minister: All Vacant Posts of Universities & Colleges to be Filled by 2017

The number of posts lying vacant in different universities & colleges across the country will be filled up in the current year, the government informed in the Rajya Sabha.

The number of posts lying vacant in different universities and colleges across the country will be filled up in the current year, the government informed in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, 2nd February 2017.

Replying to a query of a member, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said in the Upper House that by the end of the year 2017, all the vacant posts will be filled up and the government will ensure that there are no more posts vacant than what is required and permissible. From the last 6-7 years, many universities of the country did not follow the instructions for filling up of the posts. The government has asked the universities to speed up the process.

Statistics of Vacant Posts

  • There are 17,006 teaching posts of in various UGC funded central universities.
  • 6,080 teaching posts are lying vacant as on 1 October 2016.
  • Delhi University (DU) alone has 3,315 vacant teaching positions.

Javadekar also said that the government has formulated a year long plan for posting the teachers and is at the same time also exploring various means to fill up the posts. This will be done through the IIT Council that will conduct the interviews in foreign countries to bring back those talents that had left the country.

The minister further said that the UGC guidelines will be strictly followed in the appointment of the teachers. The government has been monitoring the entire appointment process, claiming it to have gained momentum. MP Karan Singh from Congress termed the issue of non-filling the posts of universities and colleges as an endemic problem and urged for a speedy solution.
