IIMC to Soon Get a Status of Deemed University: I&B Minister
Institutes such as FTII, Pune and SRFTI, Kolkata will further be affiliated to the Indian Institute of Mass Communication.
Venkaiah Naidu, the new Information & Broadcasting (I&B) minister has given a nod to the proposal seeking IIMC or the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, one of the leading journalism schools in the country, to be recognised as a deemed university.
The proposal was earlier approved by the IIMC executive council on 21st June 2016.
Other institutes such as Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata and the Institute of National Centre for Excellence in Animation, Gaming & Visual Effects will further be affiliated to IIMC according to the proposal put forth.
The final announcement will be made by the University Grants Commission (UGC) after assessment of conformation of regulations followed by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.

As IIMC offers only PG Diploma courses, the UGC had earlier rejected the proposal. However, if the above mentioned happens, the institute will then be authorised to introduce more degree and specialisation courses for students and improve the quality of academic education.
The prior aim of IIMC is to shift its focus to training, teaching and research-based curriculum that will help students learn the key aspects of journalism and mass communication in and out.
IIMC has since campuses across India in cities like Delhi, Dhenkanal (Odisha), Jammu, Kottayam (Kerala), Aizawl (Mizoram) and Amravati (Maharashtra).
