IIT Delhi has decided to increase its seats by 12.5% percent this academic year and even the following year to make way for the economically weaker quota for upper classes as directed by the MHRD. The order is for all central educational institutes to go with the 10 percent quota from the new academic session beginning in July and finalise the plan by March 31, 2019.

IIT Delhi Director, V Ramgopal Rao said they will increase the seats by 12.5 percent this year and remaining the next year. They also have to submit their financial requirements regarding the same to the government which they are in the process of doing. This has to be communicated to the central JEE coordinating office too as they should know the exact number of seats (which are likely to increase).

The major requirement as far as funds are concerned will be required for hostels and that classroom space will not be an issue. Presently, there are about 10,000 students and they need to accommodate 2,500 more students. The large hostels have a capacity for 800 students so there is a requirement for 3 more hostels. But since there is no space for new hostels, they will have to demolish the 50-year-old hostels which have 300 seats, and then make larger hostels.

The institute is following the MHRD directive and will think about the upper caste reservations only after the Supreme Court takes a decision in that regard.
