IIT Gandhinagar Introduces New Semester Course on Ancient India

IIT Gandhinagar will conduct the fourth edition of semester elective Introduction to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), with the theme 'The Idea of Ancient India'. The courses will commence from January 9, 2020. Students from other institutes in Gnadhinagar can join the course for free.

IIT Gandhinagar will conduct a new course on Ancient India which will be covered under Humanities and Social Sciences discipline. It is the fourth edition of the semester elective Introduction to Indian Knowledge Systems. The course will begin in January and will continue till April 2020. Students from other Institutions in Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar can participate in the course. No fees need to be paid to join the course.

The course offered under the Humanities and Social Sciences discipline will be conducted from January to April 2020. The first lecture will be delivered on January 9, 2020.

This year the theme is 'The Idea of Ancient India'. The theme will introduce the intellectual, scientific and artistic knowledge traditions of Ancient India and will also discuss the early Indian society.

According to sources, Apart from Prof Michel Danino and Mana Shah from IIT Gandhinagar who will be coordinating the course, eight other eminent scholars from India and abroad will teach the course. The 'The Idea of Ancient India' will help students to have clear concepts and practices of Indian architecture and the views of travelers about India.

The course will explain the idea behind the Indian traditions of worshipping images, discuss Intellectual traditions in India, explain Sanskrit Kavya as history, sacred ecology tradition in India and Indian Political aspects. It will also focus on Ethics and Morals in Indian culture. The course will also cover the Pilgrimage of India, Sacred Geography of India, mandala landscape. Students will also get a chance to learn the traditional science and technology followed in India.

Prof Srinivas Reddy from Brown University, USA and IIT Gandhinagar is an eminent scholar of Sanskrit, classical Telugu, Tamil and Indian music who will deliver the first lecture on the course. In the first lecture, he will discuss the concepts and practices of governance, political theory, moral instruction and ethical practices in India.
