IIT Kharagpur to Provide Virtual Support to Fresher Students

In order to help fresher students to get familiar with the curriculum and education process followed by the institute, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur is using its support centre – Moodle.

Moodle, an open source software, provides a platform for the students and educators to communicate all course-related details. Raja Datta, Professor at IIT Kharagpur and Principal Investigator of the project that is providing Moodle support, said that the platform was introduced in 2015 and allows the students to personalise their account as per their needs.

Facilities provided by Moodle:

• Students are able to access their course material and watch videos introducing topics that will be taught in class.
• Small video clips are also provided on the platform to get an idea of the experiments and practical sessions that will be conducted after class.
• The Moodle platform is expected to reduce the academic stress for students and allow them to manage their assignments and studies accordingly.
• The platform will also help professors in evaluating the assignments as they can be uploaded by students on Moodle.
• Already in its attempt to help newcomers have a better understanding of life at IIT Kharagpur from this year the institute is starting a 9-days special induction program.
• Quizzes and class tests are also conducted by the faculty members with the help of this platform.
• Moodle will also help in speeding up the evaluation process of assignments and tests.
• Moodle helps conduct 18 courses in each semester for undergraduate as well as post-graduate programmes.

IIT Kharagpur has 1400 students in its first-year batch, which is the largest amongst all IITs. Moodle has been very helpful in this regard as it helps in managing the academic activities for the huge batch of fresher students at the Institute.

A lot of foundation courses have been started to manage the well-being of the students and make sure that the students are able to adapt the changes that sprout in higher education system. This includes a 9-day induction programme started for freshers in order to help them cope with college life.

Datta said that IIT receives a variety of students and many of them are not accustomed to the digital facilities, therefore, Moodle acts as a basis for them to learn and get used to the digital advancements. The short clips regarding syllabus topics and experiments help the students in understanding the topics before they attend the lectures.
