Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are likely to be allowed to set their own fee structure without consulting the apex council governing the prestigious institution. The primary motive for this initiative is to enhance the autonomy of these premier institutes.

According to sources, the Board of Governors are likely to be given authority to decide the fee structure. Currently, the BOGs are not the final authority for deciding the fee structure. However, there is no confirmation whether it applies to all IITs or particular institutes.

Currently, the final decision regarding the fee structure is decided by Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development. There are 23 IITs in India which are autonomous public institutes of higher education. Former HRD Minister Smriti Irani gave the nod to increase the annual fees for undergraduate courses in the month of April. There has been a 122 percent rise in annual fees for new enrollments from the current academic session. Currently, the annual fees for undergraduate courses is Rs. 2,00,000.
