JNU Alumnus Dr Mahmood Kooria Receives ₹2 Crores for Research
Dr Mahmood Koori, who is an alumnus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, has been awarded ₹2 Crores to conduct research on the matriarchal society under the Islamic law. From the research project, he aims to shed light on the gender-equalitarian traditions that exist in the community.
A Jawaharlal Nehru University alumnus, Dr Mahmood Kooria, who is also an Indian economist, currently working in association with the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, has been conferred with 2,50,000 euros or ₹2 crores Veni Grant. The Veni grant has been allocated to his research project “Matriarchal Islam: Gendering Sharia in the Indian Ocean World”.
Official statements from University states that Dr Mahmood Kooria will be researching on the how and the why associated with the resolution of the known differences with the help the formulations of legalities of the matriarchal system under the Islamic law. Dr Kooria stated that the research has been aimed to shed a light to the part of the Muslim community that the world has not seen yet. He added that the aim was for the world to see the Muslim community and understand the diversification that is present within the community. Along with this, he wants to shed light on the “Matrilineal and Matriarchal groups” as well as the different practices that promote gender equality, as per reports from a leading news agency.

Dr Mahmood Kooria has stated that with the help of the grant, which he received from the Asia Programme of Social Science Research Council, he has already begun some of the research work in countries such as India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Comoros as well as Mozambique. He also stated that he has laid down certain objective which he aims to achieve in the project, which will include focusing the various “interpretative mechanisms of scholars” such as of the ‘female jurists’ from the ‘matriarchal communities’.

Keeping in mind the increasing tensions between the world and the Muslim Community in general along with the help of the Veni grant, which is granted by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to young scholars who recently completed their doctoral programmes, it is possible for Dr Mahmood Koori to fight the stereotypes of the Muslim Communities that run rampant among people of the world.
